Is there anything better than hanging out in a strawberry field with a strawberry farmer??? I think not!

The Scoop on Strawberry Farming in California…

It was fascinating for me to learn that California strawberry farming has given Latinos more land ownership that any other major crop, and that 25% of them have moved up the ladder of agricultural success, starting as strawberry pickers, and becoming independent strawberry growers.

I also learned that strawberries in California are harvested year-round, which means steady work for strawberry farmers and workers. They are also a high yield crop with 90% of US strawberries being grown on less than 1% of California’s farmland.

California Strawberry Farmers are Stewards of the Environment…

Of course I wanted to learn more about sustainable farming methods, water conservation, and care for the environment growing strawberries. Here’s what I learned {and saw!}…

Do you know what that machine is pictured above?

It’s a bug vacuum, and it’s used to vacuum up, you guessed it, bugs!

This is a great example of IPM {Integrated Pest Management} and one of the innovative ways both conventional and organic farmers are able to use fewer pesticides on strawberry crops.

In addition, California strawberry farmers having been using drip irrigation since the 1980’s, making them stewards of water conservation and management of soil nutrients.

Slow release nitrogen is applied to the crops via drip irrigation which allows almost all of the nitrogen to be taken up by the strawberry plants~the environmental benefit being that fertilizer run off is minimal, and very few nitrates are left to infiltrate groundwater systems.

I also loved learning about how California strawberry farmers sustain and give back to their community.

Not only have they created 70,000 jobs, California strawberry farmers have funded more than $2 million in scholarships for children of field workers, and they invest 97 cents of every farm dollar back into their communities.

It’s SO easy to make fresh Strawberry Basil Lemonade!

  • First you need to de-stem your fresh strawberries.
  • Next, you need to juice some lemons. I like this hand held lemon squeezer, and, as a bonus, you get to work out your muscles too!
  • Then you’ll toss the strawberries, lemon juice, and some fresh basil in a blender, and blend on high speed until pureed.
  • Now you can serve your Strawberry Basil Lemonade straight up, mix it with some sparkling water, or splash in a little vodka for a healthier happy hour cocktail. Cheers!

Strawberry Basil Lemonade

This simple Strawberry Bail Lemonade was inspired by some of the most delicious fresh California strawberries I’ve ever tasted. Serve it straight up, or mixed with sparkling water for a refreshing, no-sugar added drink. As a bonus, you’ll get over 100% of your daily need for vitamin C!

  • 4 cups de-stemmed fresh strawberries
  • Juice from 2 lemons
  • 1 cup fresh basil, plus additional for garnish
  • Optional, sparkling water


  • Combine strawberries, lemon juice, and basil in a high speed blender. Blend on high sped until pureed.
  • Serve straight up, over ice, or mixed with sparkling water.

8 Health Benefits of Strawberries

No. 1 | Strawberries are jam packed with vitamin C. Did you know 1 serving of strawberries {about 8 strawberries} has more vitamin C than 1 orange or 140% of the recommended daily value?

Not only does this give a boost to your immune system, but vitamin C is also an antioxidant which reduces the effects of oxidative stress on your body.

No. 2 | It’s all about that FIBER! Fiber is getting a lot of {well-deserved} attention these days, not only because it helps with digestion & a healthy gut microbiome, but also because fiber may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer.

One serving of strawberries has 3 grams of fiber, and combined with other fiber rich foods, can help you meet your goal of 25-30 grams per day. *Check out my favorite high fiber meal ideas with strawberries at the end of this post.

No. 3 | Strawberries help balance your blood sugar. Did you know that 1 serving of strawberries has just 7 grams of naturally occurring sugar? In fact, when compared to some favorite fruits in the US {apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes}, strawberries have about 1/2 the amount of sugar.

Combine that with fiber {above} and you have a low glycemic index fruit that can be a delicious addition to a diabetic friendly meal plan, and help all of us keep healthy blood sugar levels.

No. 4 | Strawberries are a good source of folate {1 serving provides 8% of the daily value}, a B-vitamin that plays many important roles including energy metabolism, proper functioning of the brain and nervous system, production of DNA and RNA, and many more.

Folate also helps maintain normal levels of homocysteine to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, and is very important for all women of childbearing age as it helps protect against neural tube defects.

NO.5 | Strawberries are rich in potassium. Strawberries, along with other fruits and vegetables, are a good source of potassium, while also being low in sodium. This combination makes strawberries a delicious addition to the DASH {Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension} diet, as diets rich in potassium {and low in sodium} may help reduce the risk of hypertension and stroke.

No. 6 | Strawberries are good for your brain, and may {along with blueberries} reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by one third. In fact, the MIND Diet, ta dietary approach that combines the DASH diet {above} with a Mediterranean diet, has been found to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 35-54% depending upon how closely the diet is followed.

In addition to strawberries and other berries, the MIND diet includes green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, beans, whole grains, olive oil, wine, fish, and poultry on a daily or weekly basis, while cutting back on red meat, butter/margarine, cheese, pastries/sweets, and fried/fast foods.

No. 7 | S is for “strawberries” and synergy! All of the “good stuff” listed above {fiber, vitamin C, potassium, folate, phytonutrients…} work best in our bodies when eaten together in the form of, *gasp*, real food!

Although supplements can be useful when nutritional needs can not be met via diet, I always recommend a “whole foods approach” first, and nutrient dense strawberries, eaten alone, or paired with other nutrient dense foods {see above} are a perfect example of food as Mother Nature intended it to be. Which leads me to my favorite reason for eating strawberries…

No. 8 | Strawberries are delicious! IMO I don’t want to eat something just because it’s nutritious. Take liver for example. Blech. Or what about turnips? No thank you! But strawberries? Oh, my goodness, yum!
