Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1 smothie

Ingredients

  • 5 dates, small, pitted
  • 4 halves walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, i.e., CocoaVia
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • pinch cinamon

Instructions

  • Pour everything in a powerful blender ( I use a Vitamix ) Blend until smooth, pour into a glass and serve.

Notes

I used medjool dates. Depending on the size of your dates, you may want to use less than 5, or the smoothie will be too sweet.

  1. What vanilla are you referring to? Vanilla essence, vanilla extract or something else?

    1. Hi! Pure vanilla extract. I’m glad you asked! I just went ahead and updated the recipe. Cheers!

  2. Charlotte Austin says:

I Love this drink! I modified it. I used 1/4 cup walnuts with 2 Tbl of Cacao powder, 1/4 tsp vanilla, sprinkles of cinnamon, 2 dates, 1 frozen banana, 2 ice cubes, and 2 cups of almond milk. Thank you EA for jumpstarting my love for this drink. You are awesome, and I love your recipes!

  3. Oh, my. Too much chocolate for me. I would not call this a smoothie. It is more like chocolate milk. I will make it again, but I will add ice (or a frozen banana) to give it some body and to, perhaps, tone down the chocolate.

    1. Hi Cheri! Thanks for your feedback. The texture isn’t like a traditional smoothie, so definitely adjust the ingredients to your taste 🙂 Cheers!

  4. 1/2 cup of liquid doesn’t seem like enough – Is that a typo?

    1. Hi Cinde! No-it’s not a typo, however the smoothie will be a little on the thick side. Feel free to thin it out with additional almond/other milk if desired. Enjoy!

  5. Beautiful food pictures! i’m not used to smoothies without bananas, so I’ll have to try this different style.

One of the best chocolate smoothie/ice cream concoctions I’ve had was: avocado, cocoa, fresh coconut milk and bananas. I like the idea of dates and will try to add them to more smoothies, hopefully in the near future!

    Best wishes!

    1. Thanks so much! This is one of my all-time favorite smoothies. It tastes very decadent~you can enjoy it for dessert!

  6. Would love to try this. Do you really use five dates? That’s a total of 335 calories in dates alone and the total count of the smoothie is 232 calories. I only have medjool so I’m wondering if that wil be sweetness overkill. 🙂

    1. Hi Polly~Great question! The calorie count is from the author of the book, and most likely based on a different variety of dates than medjool. Since you only have medjool, I would blend them in one by one, until you reach your desired level of sweetness-I do agree with you that 5 medjool dates, which tend to be larger than other varieties, is probably overkill in terms of sweetness {not to mention calories}. I’d love to hear how it turns out if you make it, and how many dates you use. Cheers!

      1. It was most certainly delicious! I used two dates. Been following you on Instagram since. Thanks for the yummy treat idea!

        1. So glad you enjoyed the smoothie Polly, and happy to hear that 2 dates worked well! Cheers!!

  7. What a delicious treat! And don’t you just love it when teens reach for healthy snacks.

  8. Yum,this looks wonderful! I love simple, vegan smoothies like this.

  9. I’m all over this smoothie! Ahhh a big tax refund – I’d spend it on a big trip somewhere – either back to the Big Island, Greece or if it was really really big…Bali 🙂

  10. To become as healthy as possible

    1. The chocolaty flavor really shines through in this smoothie Rebecca~I think you will love it!
