Can You Really Boost Your Immune System?

Hereโ€™s the deal: You canโ€™t โ€œsuperchargeโ€ your immune system overnight with a single food or supplement, despite what catchy headlines or social media trends might say.

As a registered dietitian, I like to set the record straight: A truly “boosted” immune system would be a problem (think autoimmune flares-been there, done that, allergies, or chronic inflammation).

What we want is a balanced, well-regulated immune systemโ€”one that knows when to turn on and when to calm down.

So what can you do?

You can support your immune system with daily habits and nutrient-dense foods that help it function optimally. Thatโ€™s where smoothies like this one come in.

Ingredients to Support Your Immune System

  • ๐ŸŠ Orange. Rich in vitamin C, which helps stimulate white blood cell production and acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect your cells.
  • ๐Ÿ Pineapple. Another vitamin C superstar!
  • ๐Ÿฅญ Mango + Strawberry. Naturally sweet, rich in antioxidants, and full of phytonutrients that support overall wellness.
  • ๐ŸŒฑ Fresh Ginger & Turmeric. The OG spices for fighting inflammation and reducing oxidative stress.

How to Make It-So Darn Easy!

Toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth and creamy. I typically make this immune boosting smoothie with a frozen tropical fruit blend. If you make it with fresh fruit, you’ll probably want to add some ice. And, take a look at my favorite add-ins below:

  • 1 cup tropical blend fruit, frozen or fresh-banana, mango, strawberry, and pineapple
  • 1 orange, skin & seeds removed, and cut in to chunks

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender on high-speed.
  • If not using a frozen tropical fruit blend, Add ice to achieve your desired level of frostiness and blend until all ingredients are well combined.

Notes

Ingredient Swaps
  • Use your favorite seasonal oranges. I love this with Cara Cara oranges in the winter, and Valencia oranges in the summer.
  • If you can’t find a frozen tropical fruit blend (mango, pineapple, strawberry, banana) at the grocery store, use any combination of fresh or frozen fruit.
  • Not a coconut fan? Swap the coconut milk with any milk or plant-based milk.
  • Protein powder is optional. You can make this with Noosh almond protein (one of my favorites), whey protein, egg white protein, or any other favorite plain or vanilla protein powder.
