I said it.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, my #1 tip to live a healthier, more vibrant life, is to eat more vegetables and fruits!
If you’ve been reading The Spicy RD Blog for a long time, you know that’s been my mantra from the get-go.
But, to be totally honest with you, even though I eat around 6 servings of vegetables and fruit, most days of the year, last month I was a total loser, with a capital L, about getting in my 6+ servings/day.
I could blame it all on Mr. Spicy, who started the whole month of debauchery with a {FABULOUS} surprise birthday trip for me, and our friends, to Puerto Vallarta right after Thanksgiving.
Side note: Birthday massage + hanging out by the pool with friends + margarita in hand = pure bliss!
OR, I could blame it all on the nasty cold I came down with right after our return from Puerto Vallarta, and that lasted well into the holidays.
OR, I could blame it on the holiday season, full of sweets, treats, and more good cheer, OR, the equally nasty {but fortunately short lived} stomach flu I came down with the day after Christmas.
But, the truth is, there is nothing, nobody, no one to blame~not even myself, because life happens.
Every. Single. Day.
And, the best thing we can do, when real life gets in our way, is pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, pat ourselves on the back, and get back to the habits that we know make us feel our best.
For me, that’s eating more fruits and vegetables.
Why we all should eat more vegetables and fruits…
- When you eat more vegetables and fruits, you nourish your body with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that energize you, and help you get your glow on from the inside out!
- Plus, you’re feeding fiber, aka prebiotics, to your gut’s good buggies, which helps promote a healthy microbiome. And a healthy gut = a happier, healthier you!
- You’re ADDING foods to your diet instead of taking things out, which is WAY more enjoyable, don’t you think?!
- And, lastly, when you eat more vegetables and fruits, because they’re so filling, your body naturally, almost effortlessly, craves fewer sweets, treats, and less nourishing foods, without completely removing them from your diet {see above}. This makes for a SUSTAINABLE habit that will naturally lead you to a healthy, more vibrant life for the LONG TERM!
4 Easy Ways to Eat More Vegetables and Fruits
- For starters, make it the number one habit you focus on this year. Indeed, it may be the only habit to work on, before adding in other healthy habits.
- Keep a log of how many vegetables and fruits you eat each day, for one week, then add in 1 or more servings per day each week, until you are eating, on average, 6 or more each day.
- Remember what I told you earlier…If you get your 6+ day habit going, then you slip up and fall short on your veggie and fruit intake, it’s A-OK. Just pick yourself up right where you left off. No blame, no excuses needed.
