Eat these delicious detox recipes and foods for healthy glowing skin all year long! | Spicy RD Nutrition

Summer is here and making a hot statement almost every day, which means it is essential to care for our skin beyond admiration of the amazing bronze or pretty pink we tend to sport after a Saturday on the sand, by eating these delicious, detox recipes and foods not only in the summer but all year long!

Before I tell you about the protective powers of colorful foods, we need to remember that over-exposure to the sun can actually be hugely damaging to our skin cells. I like to think of these cells as hard-working citizens all working their butts off to protect the empire that is our body!

Think about it like this, when the sunlight hits those skin cells those citizens have to work extra, extra hard because they are not only synthesizing Vitamin D but they are also working to repair the damage that is done by those UV rays we soaked up on the beach volleyball court last weekend.

Detox through your skin…

Okay so first off letโ€™s set up the framework for how to feed your skin and why eating certain foods would even help your skin in the first place. We have all heard of detox right? Most of us have heard of it because we have been bombarded with the latest 5-day juicing detox diet that rides along with a promise of optimizing your health and vitality.

As promising as this may sound, and as delicious {not to mention expensive!} as that juice may be,it’s a lot more beneficial for you to add detoxifying whole foods into your diet DAILY, and then keep them in the rotation for the long run, rather than eating {or drinking!} them for just 5 days.

A note about detox…I should let you in on the fact that the body has many ways of releasing toxins that we have inside. It all comes down to a handful of major organs. Hereโ€™s the list: liver, lungs, kidneys, and skin! That is right. Your skin is an essential organ for detoxification!

Detox recipes and foods to nourish your skin…

So the question is how do we detox through our skin and supply the raw materials for those hard-working skin cells to ensure a happy healthy life for them and ultimately for our skin? The answer in my life always comes back to food, so here are some delicious recipes and foods to nourish your skin this summer and all year long.

Antioxidant-rich foods

If your favorite color is black, keep it for your wardrobe! Because when it comes to your diet the more colorful the plate the more phytochemicals youโ€™ll be consuming, and that means rich antioxidants for your body!

Foods for healing your skin…

Skin cells are here and gone so quickly as they are replaced by younger cells – real up-and-comers! Because of this rapid turnover rate we need to supply enough energy and nutrients to support the new growth of cells. This is especially true after a bad sunburn {which hopefully you won’t get because you’ll be keeping your skin protected with these sun smart tips from top dermatologists!}

ENJOY THE FOLLOWING FOODS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AS SNACKS OR INCORPORATED INTO MEALS

  • Protein: yogurt, eggs, quality meats
  • Zinc: kidney beans, eggs, quality meats
  • Vitamin C: sweet potatoes, fresh fruits (especially citrus)

Eat some fat for healthy glowing skin!

Every cell in our body contains fat. The fat is the barrier that keeps the cell alive! We want to keep that watery internal environment of the cell contained and keep the cell nice and firm with the ring of fat around. Some easy ways to add EFA’s {Essential Fatty Acids} are from snacking on walnuts or adding chia, flax, or hemp seeds to your salad dressings, smoothies, or toast with almond butter.

Donโ€™t forget we are mostly made of WATER

We want our skin cells plump! Fill them up with the water they need to do more than โ€œjust keep swimming.โ€ Most people need about 2-3L of waterโ€ฆso that handy water bottle should go from full to empty about 3-4 times a day.

Try this Strawberry Top Lemon Infused Water, or your own favorite fruit and herb concoction to soothe your skin, and stay hydrated all day long!
