Confession. I am a self help podcast (books too!) junkie. It’s my “not so guilty” pleasure that’s helped me boost my daily step intake this past year. And, improve my mental health. Something I think we’re all craving more of this year!

Not only has this habit of listening to self help, nutrition, and fitness podcasts helped my personal development, it’s motivated me to move more (at least a little-baby steps!) this year-one of my Five in 45 goals from last year.

Have you jumped on the podcast bandwagon yet?

If you have, you know that there are thousands (actually millions according to this podcast statistic) of self help and other podcasts to choose from.

And, if you haven’t jumped on the podcast bandwagon yet, hopefully my list of favorite nutrition, fitness, and self help podcasts will encourage you to start listening.

Even better, to take a daily walk or get some exercise at the same time. The ultimate win, win!

How to listen & subscribe to podcast episodes

I originally started listening on the Apple podcast app on my phone. Then I got turned on to the Overcast app.

Overcast is free (iOs only), has smart speed (shortens silences in talk shows), and voice boost. You can search for podcasts by topic, subscribe to your favorites, and create podcast lists by category.

If you don’t use an iphone, check out Spotify & Stitcher (iOS, Android, Web) for additional podcast subscription options. In addition, most of the podcasts I link to below allow you to read transcripts of the episodes.

Here are my personal favorite nutrition, fitness, and self help podcasts (in alphabetical order). I’ve included the podcast host(s) along with a description of each podcast, plus a brief personal commentary.

“Welcome to The 40+ Fitness Podcast-better health and fitness in your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. My goal is to educate, encourage and entertain. Five days per week I give you actionable information on exercise, nutrition, and overall well being. Get moving and start improving your health and fitness today.”

I’ve been listening to the 40+ Fitness Podcast for awhile now, and enjoy the interviews with health and fitness experts. Although I don’t always agree with some of the nutrition information provided, overall I think the content is good and motivating-especially if you’re looking to up your fitness game at any age.

TWO | Anxiety Salyer with hosts Shann Vander Leek and Ananga Sivyer

“Award-Winning Anxiety Relief Podcast with tips, tools, and practices to help you calm anxiety, stress, PTSD, and panic attacks. Give us 5 minutes and we’ll give you a calmer mind.”

I started listening to this podcast this summer when my daughter and I were quarantined together for a couple of weeks in an apartment in New Jersey. Although I don’t consider myself an anxious person, in general, like many people, I have definitely noticed an overall increase in anxiety since COVID started.

The hosts are very calming and offer actionable tips for calming anxiety-sometimes immediately. Highly recommend!

THREE | Building a StoryBrand/Business Made Simple with Donald Miller

The Building a StoryBrand Podcast is as entertaining as it is informative. Journey with Donald Miller and his cohost JJ Peterson as they explore all things business by interviewing fascinating guests while doling out marketing wisdom by the bucket full.

I was first introduced to Donald Miller after reading his book, Building a Story Brand. I was looking for books to recommend to my Nutrition & Leadership students at Bastyr University and this book was highly recommended by my colleagues.

No matter whether you’re an entrepreneur or work for an organization, the Business Made Simple is worth listening to if you’re looking to become a better leader.

FOUR | Health, Nutrition, and Functional Medicine with host Dr. Michael Ruscio

“Cutting edge information in health, nutritioin and functional medicine distilled into practical advice you can use to improve your health.”

As someone who is interested in integrative nutrition and functional medicine, yet is skeptical about a lot of the “black and white” nutrition advice provided by some functional medicine practitioners, I find Dr. Ruscio’s podcast to be a breath of fresh air.

Topics include gut health, autoimmune disease, and more. While geared towards health professionals, there is lots of good advice for anyone dealing with their own health concerns.

FIVE | Foodtrainers with host Lauren Slayton

“This weekly show from NYC-based registered dietitian Lauren Slayton provide real-life solutions to your wellness questions, while keeping things light and fun. In under 30 minutes, this show will provide you with nutrition info you haven’t heard and help you feel your absolute best.”

I’ve been a fan of Lauren’s coaching style and nutrition advice for a long time now. She keeps things fresh, fun, and realistic. We both have teenagers/college age kids and share a love of books, skiing, & travel. Definitely recommend you subscribe to her podcast!

SIX | Happier with host Gretchen Rubin

“Gretchen Rubin is HAPPIER, and she wants you to be happier too. The #1 bestselling author of The Happiness Project and Better Than Before gets more personal than ever as she brings her practical, manageable advice about happiness and good habits to this lively, thought-provoking podcast.”

Happier is another self help podcast I stumbled upon after reading the author’s books (I link to one of her books, The Happiness Project, in this post: Healthy Habits Resources).

I feel like I’m walking with a friend as I listen to Gretchen and her sister talk about their real life experimentation building healthy habits and living their happiest lives. Fun and entertaining!

SEVEN | Let’s Gut Real Podcast with Andrea hardy, RD

“Making nutrition science accessible and easy-to-digest, andrea Hardy, Canada’s Gut Health Dietitian, is on a mission to connect people to credible, up-to-date nutrition information about gut health and digestive disorders.”

As a gut health dietitian specialising in celiac disease, IBS, IBD, SIBO, and the low FODMAP diet, I appreciate Andrea’s discussion on a wide variety of gut health topics. There’s a lot of confusion (and sometimes misinformation) about the best diet and lifestyle for digestive disorders. I like that I can refer my clients to the Let’s Gut Real podcast for timely, credible nutrition advice.

EIGHT | Natural Medicine Journal Podcast

“Natural Medicine Journal’s interviews with thought-leaders in the field of natural and integrative medicine dig deep into the most important topics in the field…each episode promises to provide trusted, cutting edge, evidence-based knowledge about natural medicine that you won’t find anywhere else.”

Another one of my go-to podcasts for integrative health and functional medicine news. I love the wide variety of topics presented, including immunity, heart health, neurological conditions, and more.

NINE | New Frontiers in Functional Medicine by host Dr. Kara Fitzgerald

“Welcome to New Frontiers in Functional Medicine. Each month, I interview the best minds in Functional Medicine. Expect thought provoking ideas, new research, lots of clinical pearls for practitioners, and step-change information for consumers and patients.”

My third pick for all things functional medicine and nutrition. While also mostly geared towards clinicians, anyone with a strong interest in integrative health should give it a listen.

TEN | The Art of Charm by hosts Johnny and AJ

“The Art of Charm is where self-motivated people just like you, come to lean from the company’s coaches about how to master human dynamics, relationships, and becoming your best self with the help of Johnny and AJ.”

Because everyone (ok, most of us) can use a little extra confidence in life, right? I love learning about what makes people tick and how to be a better communicator. If this sounds like you too, give The Art of Charm a listen!

ELEVEN | This Unmillennial Life with host Regan Jones, RDN

“This Unmillennial Life is a podcast that offers a roadmap through midlife for women who’ve fallen into a generational gap.”

Although everyone is welcome, This Unmillennial Life is geared towards Gen-X women, like myself, born between 1965-1980.

I love the WIDE variety of topics presented by Regan, a fellow dietitian and friend, including nutrition for longevity, nutrigenomics, fasting, workouts, the Enneagram (I have no idea what mine is), and even how to get longer eyelashes (sign me up!). It’s fun AND educational-highly recommend!

TWELVE | The Productivity Show by Asian Efficiency

“Asian Efficiency is the leading website on time management and productivity. Learn how to be efficient, get things done (GTD), and stay motivated”

Not only am I a self help podcast junkie, I’m hooked on anything related to time management and productivity. I consider myself a work in progress, so when I need a little extra motivation, I love listening to The Productivity Show.

THIRTEEN | The Nutrition Show with host Mary Purdy, MS, RDN

“Formerly โ€œMaryโ€™s Nutrition Show,โ€ in โ€œThe Nutrition Showโ€, voted as one of the Best 15 Nutrition Podcasts, Mary Purdy, MS, RDN, dishes out easy-to-digest information, tips, and advice about nutrition and planetary health, backed by over 12 years of clinical nutrition experience, a passion for sustainability and a healthy sense of humor to inspire you to eat better, feel better, and look better while making eco-friendly choices.”

Nutrition made FUN! Seriously, I love listening to Mary and her partner, Keith Hitchcock chat about various nutrition topics ranging from nutrition and autoimmunity, eating organic (or not), regenerative agriculture, diet and hormonal imbalances, and more. The Nutrition Show was one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, and I still love it!

FOURTEEN | The Unconventional RD Podcast

“Are you ready to think outside of the traditional employment box and create your own unconventional income streams?? Then you’re in the right place. Each week, dietitian Erica Julson talks all things online-business, to help you start, grow, and scale your own digital empire.”

While this podcast is geared towards registered dietitians, topics like SEO, marketing, and how to grow your email list, will appeal to anyone with an online business. It’s one of my “must listen to’ podcasts with new episodes airing almost every week.

FIFTEEN | Unlocking Us with host Brene Brown

“Conversations that unlock the deeply human part of who we are, so that we can live, love, parent, and lead with more courage and heart.” Episodes will include conversations with the people who are teaching me, challenging me, confusing me, or maybe even ticking me off a little…We don’t have to do life alone. We were never meant to .”

Many of you may have be familiar with Brene Brown through her books or Ted Talks. Dr. Brown is a joy to listen to as she offers her own experiences and studies on courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy~issues many of us can relate to.
