SunGold Kiwifruit Ponzu Sauce and Marinade #sponsored

As in this tropical-sweet Sungold kiwifruit that’s topping my Salmon Power Bowl loaded with salmon {it’s hard to see, but it’s in there covered w/ cilantro!}, brown rice, shredded carrots, cucumber, avocado, and more kiwifruit in the form of this sweet and citrusy SunGold Ponzu Sauce and Marinade…It might not look the prettiest, but boy is it tasty!

FYI: 1 serving {2 SunGold kiwifruit} has 3 x more vitamin C than an orange + just as much potassium as a banana. Pretty cool, huh?!Another cool thing about all kiwifruit, both green and SunGold, is that it contains an enzyme, actinidin, that breaks down protein and acts like a meat tenderizer. Hence the reason you can use your leftover kiwifruit ponzu sauce as a marinade too! I haven’t tried it yet, but I plan on marinating some chicken in my leftover SunGold Kiwifruit Ponzu Sauce. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Or, feel free to stop by one afternoon when Mr. Spicy is hanging out by the grill. He may even offer you a beer from his tap πŸ™‚

Oh, and before I share my Salmon Power Bowl recipe with you, here’s one more interesting bit of information I recently discovered about kiwifruit…

The actinidin and fiber in kiwifrui may help ease digestive discomfort, including bloating and constipation. And, since kiwifruit is low FODMAP, it may be a delicious fruit choice for anyone with IBS.

In addition, kiwifruit, in the form of a freeze dried kiwifruit extract, was shown to act as a prebiotic in one human study, by raising levels of  lactic acid bacteria {lactobacilli and bifidobacteria}. The study was very small, and the effect lasted only while the subjects were eating the kiwifruit extract, but still, it’s an interesting study, and I’ll be staying tuned for more research on kiwifruit and gut health!

Salmon Power Bowl w/ SunGold Kiwifruit Ponzu Sauce and Marinade

SunGold Kiwifruit Ponzu Sauce and Marinade

  • 2 Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce or gluten-free tamari
  • 1 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves
  • Salmon Power Bowls
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 8 ounces seared salmon or canned salmon
  • 2 SunGold Kiwifruit, skin removed and sliced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cucumber, chopped
  • 1/2 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cup {or to taste} Sungold Ponzu Sauce, divided
  • Sesame Seeds or Gomasio, optional to sprinkle on top of Salmon Power bowls
  • Additional cilantro for garnish, optional


  • Make the sauce/marinade: Scoop the fruit out of the kiwifruit and place in a blender along with the lemon juice, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce/tamari, and cilantro. Blend on high speed until smooth. Set aside until ready to use. Note: May be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Make the power bowls: Place 3/4 cup cooked rice in each bowl, and top each with 4 ounces cooked salmon, 1 sliced Sungold kiwifruit, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 of the cucumber, 1/2 of the avocado slices, and 1/4 cup {or to taste} of the sauce. Sprinkle sesame seeds/gamasio on top of each bowl, and garnish with additional cilantro if desired.


1. Limit avocado to 1/4 total {or 1/8th per serving} for low FODMAP version.2. You will likely have some leftover sauce, which you can use for another power bowl, or try out as a marinade for meat or chicken.
