Let’s talk kiwifruit today!
As in this tropical-sweet Sungold kiwifruit that’s topping my Salmon Bowl loaded with salmon, brown rice, shredded carrots, cucumber, avocado, and more kiwifruit in the form of this sweet and citrusy SunGold Ponzu Sauce and Marinade…It might not look the prettiest, but boy is it tasty!
What is SunGold Kiwifruit?
Unlike the traditional fuzzy-skinned, slightly tangy, green kiwifruit you’re probably used to, Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit has smooth skin, a tropical-sweet taste, and a gorgeous golden hue.
It’s ok though because my friends at Zespri have plenty of photos to share with you on their website, plus you can get loads of delicious kiwifruit recipes.
One serving (2 SunGold kiwifruit) has 3 x more vitamin C than an orange + just as much potassium as a banana.
Another cool thing about all kiwifruit, both green and SunGold, is that it contains an enzyme, actinidin, that breaks down protein and acts like a meat tenderizer.
Hence the reason you can use your leftover kiwifruit ponzu sauce as a marinade too!
Additionally, the actinidin and fiber in kiwifruit may help ease digestive discomfort, including bloating and constipation. And, since kiwifruit is low FODMAP, it may be a delicious fruit choice for anyone with IBS.

PS I really rate the Sungolds. Some people who are sensitive (rather than allergic) to green kiwis can often eat Sungold without irritation. In my case green kiwi causes a bit of itching on my hands and mouth, but no irritation with a Sungold. And I prefer their flavour too. 🙂
That sauce! It’s positively drinkable! The whole thing is tempting me to make it RIGHT NOW despite the fact I have just had breakfast and need to head out the door. Pinning, Flipping, FBing, SUing, Yumming 🙂
