Tips for Making the Best Healthy Salad Recipes

Bonus! In case you want to try your hand at creating your own healthy salad recipes (I hope so!), here’s my simple formula for crave-worthy (non-boring!) salads.

  1. Start with a flavorful base. Build your bowl with leafy greens like spinach, arugula, butter lettuce, or chopped kale.
  2. Add colorful produce. Think beets, broccoli, bell peppers, roasted sweet potatoes, shredded carrots, cucumbers, radishes, cherry tomatoes, apples, blueberries, citrus, blueberries, strawberries, and dried fruit. Really, anything goes!
  3. Include protein (for main dish salads). Protein helps turn salads into satisfying meals. Try chickpeas, black beans, lentils, edamame, tofu, grilled chicken, salmon, and lean steak.
  4. Add healthy fats. Healthy fats help your body absorb nutrients and add richness. Great options include avocado, olives, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and more.
  5. Finish with a flavorful dressing. Bright vinaigrettes, citrus dressings, and herb-packed sauces bring everything together. This easy homemade vinaigrette is a staple at my house! My good friend says, “I love your salad sauce!”
