Before I share the recipes with you, let’s talk about guidelines for choosing and preparing healthy gluten free snacks for kids that will fuel their after-school activities, without ruining their appetite for dinner…
Limit Processed Foods
Whole foods tend to be the most nutritious but it is okay to choose a few convenience foods you can trust. We know it’s not realistic to make everything from scratch! For example, it is great to keep a hummus, a nut or seed butter without added oils and sugars, low added sugar yogurt, or crackers (like Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers) on hand.
Include a Fruit or Veggie
Snack time is a great opportunity to present fruits and veggies in different ways. Fruit isn’t just for breakfast and veggies shouldn’t only be served with dinner. Try a fruit salad, a fruit parfait, fruit smoothie, veggies with dip, or experiment with veggies cut into different shapes or cooked versus raw.
Keep Added Sugar Low
A little bit of sugar is appropriate to enhance flavor and to encourage a positive outlook on food and food choices without restriction. But, a high sugar snack will give your kids a quick burst of energy and lead to a crash shortly after.
Make It Last Until Dinner
Include a source of fiber, protein, or fat to increase satiety and help them feel satisfied until dinner. Fiber, protein, and fat take longer to digest than simple carbs and can prevent a crash in energy.
Choose Certified Gluten Free Ingredients If Needed
If your child needs to follow a strict gluten free diet for celiac disease, make sure the ingredients you choose are truly gluten free.
Although there are many whole grains that are naturally gluten free, cross contamination with gluten containing grains in always a possibility. This goes for pulses (i.e. lentils, chickpeas, etc), as well as nuts and seeds.
While products labeled “gluten free” should contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, unfortunately some labeled products have been found to contain gluten. If you are unsure of a product, Gluten Free Watchdog is an excellent website to see what products really are gluten free.
You may also choose to stick with certified gluten free products, like the Simple Mills Cheddar Crackers in the Sweet & Smoky Snack Mix recipes I’m sharing below.
