No. 1 | Visit a {New} Farmers Market

One of my favorite summer bucket list ideas is strolling through different farmers markets, not only in your home town, but also where ever your summer travels take you. I’ve been to farmers’ markets in Hong Kong, Hawaii, Ojai, Portland {one of my favorites!}, England, New York, and many others. After hiking {see #10 below}, it’s one of my favorite things to do on vacation!

No. 2 | Try a New Recipe for Meatless Monday

Even better-get your children, spouse, or significant other to plan and cook a plant-based meal for you, once a week, like I’m planning this summer! {They just don’t know this yet-ha!}

With relaxed schedules, longer days, and no pressures of homework, summer is a great time to involve other family members in preparing meals. And, having a theme, like Meatless Monday, makes it even more fun!

Here’s some inspiration to get your crew started:

No. 3 | Tantalize Your Tastebuds with Delicious In-Season Produce

Raise your hand if get as excited as I do for the gorgeous summer fruits and veggies that are starting to pop-up at farmer’s markets, grocery stores, and in your local CSA boxes!!!

Summer is prime season for fresh berries, stone fruit {peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, & nectarines}, watermelon, sweet corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and lots of antioxidant packed fresh herbs. Go ahead & try them all this summer!

No. 4 | Chill Out{side} w/ These Easy No Bake Recipes

I don’t know about your kitchen, but mine sure gets hot in the summertime. Not only is it on the 2nd floor, it also has a large bank of windows facing West, so the late afternoon sun keeps it hot, hot, hot! My solution? A delicious, no-bake meal, eaten outside!

Here are some more delicious no bake recipes to try:

No. 5 | Hydrate w/ a Cool Reusable Water Bottle

Need a little motivation to drink more water this summer? Treat yourself to a fun, reusable water bottle!  Just a few of the health benefits of staying well hydrated include: Gorgeous glowing skin, a well functioning {and focused!} brain, freedom from headaches, regularity {ahem, relieves constipation}, a pepped up energy level, & enhanced athletic performance.

Check out some of my favorite reusable water bottles:

  • Hydro Flask . A classic that I always try & keep pre-filled in the fridge, especially for taking to the gym or kids’ sports
  • S’well {pricy but fun bottles that may inspire you to drink more H20)
  • Justfwater {I like this one because the bottle is glass, and includes a stainless steel tea/fruit/herb infuser}.

No. 6 | Crank Up The Intensity of Your Workouts

The summer is a perfect time to get your sweat on outside. One of the most effective workouts is High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT. HIIT cardio workouts are great because they can be adjusted to any terrain, and help make the most of a busy schedule, even if you only have 15-20 minutes to squeeze in a workout!

If you haven’t tried it yet, I love the aaptiv an on-demand audio fitness app that combines personal trainer guided workouts + motivation music.

I’ve done HIIT workouts on the elliptical, as well as outside, plus there are so many other workouts to try including yoga, strength training, cycling, and more.

No. 7 | Upgrade Your Surroundings and #OptOutside

Even if you have a gym membership, sometimes it’s nice to get some fresh air. One of the biggest hold-ups for people when it comes to exercising outdoors is the lack of “equipment”. But it’s actually super easy to grab a bench or find some stairs, and get in a full body workout incorporating dips, squats, lunges, and pushups.

Heading out of town? It’s also fun to try a new outdoor sport when your on vacation. My family and I have gone zip lining, white water rafting, scuba diving, and I even tried mountain biking last summer in Montana {side note, it was fun, but I’ve never cursed so much in my life!} What are your favorite summertime outdoor sports activities???

No. 8 | Grab a Workout Buddy

What better way to stay motivated than to enlist a friend? Working out with a friend has been proven to keep you more accountable, which can ultimately help you achieve your goals. Sign up to try a new fitness class with a buddy, hit the courts for a fun game of doubles tennis, or grab a group of friends for a kickball game in the park!

You may also want to harness the power of technology, and set up a summer workout buddy schedule on Google sheets like my friends and I do for our weekly workout class. Any other ideas to stay motivated to workout during the summer??

No. 9 | Hit the Beach for a Sea & Sand Workout

Try spicing up your usual workout with some fun (and fitness) in the sun! In addition to working within a terrain you might not normally encounter-namely, sand- the beach is a great opportunity to take a dip, and swim some laps. Since swimming is an incredible aerobic exercise, you’ll be working out and it won’t even feel like work!

Other fun sea & sand “workouts” include building sand castles, walking your pup on the beach, playing frisbee with your kids, & stand-up paddle boarding. What are your favorite beach activities???

One of my favorite San Diego Hikes! Mt. Woodson and Potato Chip Rock. ~8 miles round-trip, a good workout, and great views!

If you live in San Diego, or come for a visit, head up to Potato Chip Rock at the top of Mt Woodson, for a fabulous workout, and breath taking views! There are 2 routes, a longer ~7 mile trail, or a quicker {but steeper} ~ 4 mile trail. Warning: It gets hot in the summer, so bring LOTS of water {see No. 5 above}

No. 10 | Take a Hike!

I saved my favorite summer bucket list idea for last! Hiking {see above} is an inexpensive, accessible form of exercise. Most people live a relatively short drive from a state park or community nature preserve, which means that for less than the price of a cup of coffee in many cases, you can fit in a decent workout-all while taking in the beauty of nature!

Don’t underestimate the power of a good hike: sources suggest that an average person can burn nearly 500 calories on a one hour walk.
