Stay Fit This Summer Family Style {Fun Giveaway Too!}

summertime fitness {family style} posterNote: The Giveaway has ended…

The kids have been out of school for 2 weeks now, so my fitness routine {if you can call it a routine since I am used to “last minute” workouts right before the kids get out of school} has become a little wonky.  Not wonky as in “bad wonky”, but wonky as in “good wonky” :-)

Instead of bemoaning the lack of time I have to exercise this summer, I’ve decided to suck it up and embrace the chaos in my life with the kids out of school, and stay fit with them family style.

One thing my kids and their friends have taught me {ok they have taught me many things!}, is that exercise and staying fit can be a blast!

Even if you don’t have kids, try mixing up your normal fitness routine this summer, and instead, concentrate on staying fit {or getting fit} while keeping it fun.  Here are some ideas…

Seven Ways to Stay Fit This Summer {Family Style}

ONE: Head for the Sand and Dig a Hole {Have Fun at the Beach!}

Want a fantastic arm workout without weights?  Try digging a DEEP hole in the sand.  My arms were seriously sore the next couple of days after digging this hole at the beach with Big Tex!

TWO: Put Some Pedal to the Metal {Ride a Bike!}

Lucky me, I recently got a new bike, and my kids and I have been having fun getting out and about on our wheels.  So far we have ridden around Lake Miramar, plus we’ve done several neighborhood rides, including one to the grocery store {to pick up peanut butter for these yummy treats} with my kids plus 3 other neighborhood kids in tow.  It kinda made me feel like the Pied Piper!

THREE: Make a Fuzzy Friend Happy {Walk a dog!}

labradoodlePlease, pretty pretty please, walk me!  Don’t have a dog?  I’m sure you might have a friend or neighbor who would love to loan you their dog to take on a walk!

FOUR: Make a Big Racquet {Play Tennis!}

tennis racquet and ball.I love to play tennis, but I don’t play it nearly enough.  Since we don’t belong to a tennis club, I’m always on the lookout for FREE open tennis courts, and the local high school courts are perfect for this! My kids just finished a week long tennis and swimming camp, so I’m sure they’ll be ready to give me a good challenge on the courts this summer!

FIVE: Run Baby Run {Play Tag}

SIX: Hoof It! {Walk, Walk, Walk!}

One thing I love about summer, is the SLOWER PACE of it all.  Since the kids have a lot more free time on their hands than usual, it’s a great time to walk anywhere and everywhere we can.  Today we’re heading to the San Diego County Fair.  If we drive and try and park in the CRAZY FAIR TRAFFIC, it will likely take us 45 minutes to an hour to get there.  Mind you , this is only a couple of miles from our house, so instead the kids and I are going to walk there, and my husband will meet us there later and drive us home.  The kids and I get some exercise, plus we don’t have to deal with the stress of all the traffic.  Win, win!

SEVEN:Head for the Hills {Go Camping!}

This past weekend, a couple of girlfriends and myself {one husband was out of town, one had a swollen ankle, and one had a swollen toe!} ventured a couple of hours north of San Diego with our kids to Idyllwild for an overnight camping trip. It was a blast, and it only cost us $20.00 for our gorgeous camp site nestled amongst the pine trees and manzanita.  Although we didn’t get any serious hiking in {Our friend V. left the tennis shoes at home by mistake-oops!} we did get a little nature hike/bouldering in with the kids, plus setting up our ginormous family tent gave me quite the workout :-)  If you are an outdoorsy type person, I can highly recommend a good old fashioned camping trip!

As for the fun giveaway?  Well, in addition to staying fit with my kids this summer, I’ve also found some time to do some deep cleaning.  So far I’ve tackled Big Tex’s room {SiSi’s room is next!}, and the family office.

Lucky you, WAY deep down in a pile of stuff important papers I found a $15.00 i tunes gift card {that’s 11 new songs for your workout inspiration!}that I’m willing to share with one lucky reader!

All you have to do to enter, is to leave a comment below with your favorite FUN way you will stay fit this summer!

Additional giveaway details:  US mailing address only please.  The giveaway runs between July 3 and July 11, 9 pm PT.  One winner will be chosen via random.org to win a $15.00 i tunes gift card {Note: I purchased this with my own money, and was not compensated in any way or form by i tunes.}

Good luck, have fun, and stay fit this summer!

  1. I ADORE this post!! Fun in the sun :) Such great ideas! And you KNOW I love the tennis ;)

  2. I jump rope, run, walk on my lunch breaks and lift weight! I also enjoy a yoga class, biking with friends and taking a evening stroll. Any physical activity is game in my book!

  3. My summer, “fun” workouts are hiking, longer walks with Oakley, and water skiing (at least for the few days I head to the lake to visit my parents)!

  4. Its so hot and humid here I will be stuck on a machine of some sort inside i’m afraid! Like the dreadmill!! Your card could help though!

  5. awesome tips for staying active and fun ones, we just got our bikes serviced and a bike rack fitted onto my car to start cycling again also kiddie seats

  6. Riding my bike around base, although I will say I discovered that my dog makes a good walking partner. She can last 30 minutes, which is way more than I thought she could. She gets easily distracted and stops to sniff (and do you know what on) everything, and then she wants to find a shady area and lay in the breeze, but she managed to hang there for 2 walks last week. I am with you on the walk, walk, walk. Ryan and I will be heading to do some walking, I mean hiking soon. We are off to Mt. Fuji later this month.

  8. such great tips! it can be hard for me to squeeze in exercise in the summer because it’s sooo hot outside, so i try to take advantage of the cooler mornings + evenings with strolls with my husband or playing in the yard with my pup. =)

  9. Carolyn K. says:

    I prefer to swim when it’s hot outside. Get a work out in AND stay cool. :) Luckily we have a pool at our apartment complex, so it’s free too!

  10. Looks like some great ways to get in activity!
    Since Vegas is so darn hot, I love swimming and hiking (very early, of course)!
    My sister and I used to play tennis quite a bit when we were younger..reminds me to go!

  11. I have a hard time getting to my yoga classes or the gym during summertime. I just want to be outside! These are great tips.

  12. EA, so glad you are enjoying the summer outdoors and being with your kids. i’ve been trying to make it a goal to be active every day! hope you are well :)

  13. I love this reminds me of primal/paleo advice to play and we all have the time. I have a new bike too, how fun is it? I can’t wait for my kids to get home from camp to ride. Great reminders EA.

  14. I haven’t worked out for two weeks and can’t wait to get outside at lunch today. I do a run/walk – I walk a song, and then I run a song, usually for about 50 minutes – glad the temps have cooled down so I can do this! So pick me so I can have some new tunes! :D

  15. Madeline says:

    I love going on hikes with my family.
