My 2nd Annual December Fitness Challenge and Giveaway!

Update January 9, 2012:

Congrats to Karriann Graf and Jen Trussell-You are the winners of my $25.00 i tunes gift certificate December Fitness Challenge and Giveaway!

From Karriann…

I’m up for the December challenge! Planning to exercise 4 days a week….running, walking, jogging, biking etc. Just some form of exercise to keep my body moving!I might need some encouragement! ~Karriann Graf, comment #19 chosen via random.org

And from Jen…

I did pretty good with my December challenge. I only missed a few workouts. I did not gain any weight which was my main goal for the month. I found that having goals helped keep me focused. Also I kept a log of my workouts and food. This helped me greatly because I could see exactly what I was doing. Also I dealt with the stress or work, family and the holiday’s better than normal thanks to all the gym time I was getting in! Thanks for the wonderful challenge…I can’t wait for next year. I’ve now set month and quarterly goals for myself to help keep me on the right path!!~Jen Trussell, comment #35 chosen via random.org

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the 2011 challenge! I hope you all managed to get some good workouts in during the month of December.

As for me, while I did not meet my goal 100 %, I did complete about 75 % of my planned workouts which is much better that what I would have done without the challenge.

I wish you all a healthy, happy and FIT 2012 and beyond!!!

It’s that time of the year again…

Thanks to all of last years December fitness challengers, I managed to keep fit last holiday season, and I’m looking to all of you to motivate me again!

For those of you who didn’t participate last year, let me get you up to speed on what the December Fitness Challenge is all about…

December Fitness Challenge

Are any of you like me, and find your fitness routine somewhat lacking in December?  Or, even worse, non-existent???  If your answer is YES, then please join me as I embark upon my December fitness challenge…

Why I am starting this challenge: Personally speaking, December has always been a difficult month for me to keep up my fitness routine.  Most of you probably know the drill.  There are sparkly lights to hang, holiday cards to mail, original and unique presents to buy, festive parties to attend, delicious cookies to bake, intoxicating beverages to drink, and out of school children to entertain.  Whew!  Are you tired already???

Believe me, I really do look forward to this special time of year, but I find that SOMETHING usually has to give.  And, for me, unfortunately, that SOMETHING is usually exercise.

And truly, if you want to survive December with a smile on your face, a twinkle in your eye, a non-expanding waistline , and a stress level that isn’t through the roof, exercise is the last thing you should let slip through the cracks!  So, if you are in agreement with me, please read on for more details about the December fitness challenge and contest….

Are you ready to join the fun {and giveaway!!!}???

Here’s how it works…

  1. Between now and December 1, come up with your OWN fitness challenge.  What workout routine will YOU commit to sticking with throughout the entire month of December?  Make sure it’s appropriate to your current fitness level {Please consult with your physician before participating if you haven’t already been exercising.}  To give you an example, here’s mine: Four days/week minimum I will do a cardio workout {fast walking/hiking, jogging, treadmill, biking, other} for at least 2o minutes, plus I will do a minimum of two 20+ minute strength training sessions per week, and 3 abs workouts per week.
  2. Mandatory -Leave a comment on my blog by or before December 1, 2011, 9 pm PST, stating what YOUR fitness challenge is.
  3. Optional 1-Leave ANOTHER comment on my blog under this same post between December 31 and January 6, 2012, 9 pm PST, stating how your December fitness challenge worked out for you. Did you stick with your plan?  Did following the fitness challenge help give you more energy?  Deal with holiday stresses better? What are your fitness goals for 2011? Be honest :-)
  4. Optional 2-Follow me @thespicyRD on Twitter {follow the #DecFit hashtag} and/or Facebook The Spicy RD to get updates on my own progress, plus share your own progress. Leave a comment here letting me know if you follow me.
  5. Optional 3-Leave a comment here with your favorite workout tunes!!!

Now for the fun part!

What you will get out of the December Fit Challenge???

  1. More energy!
  2. Less stress!
  3. More positive outlook!
  4. Less/NO {unwanted} holiday weight gain!
  5. TWO challengers will be chosen {via random.org} to win a $25.00 iTunes electronic gift certificates so you can download new tunes for workout motivation in 2012!!!  You can enter up to 4 times {see above}, but you must leave a separate comment for each entry.  Need any workout suggestions???  Click here for my {eclectic} workout playlist!

Are you ready???

Then tie up those laces and let the challenge begin!!!

Looks like these folks are having a nice leisurely stroll…You may want to pick up the pace a little with your own workouts…Just sayin’ :-)

  1. I love this! Funny, my coworkers and I are going to start a holiday challenge. We have all been struggling with motivation and eating lots of unneeded goodies so this will be a perfect time to start your challenge.
My fitness challenge will be to maintain 4 days a week of hour workouts along with 3 days of 30 minute workouts and/or yoga. :)

  2. OK – I’m IN! I need some motivation (and support) to get back on the wagon! I commit to exercising 3x/week. Do SOMETHING – gym or on my own… just do it! I need to make room in my schedule and prioritize my own fitness – which is the exact opposite of what I do now…. everything else comes before, and instead of my exercise! UGH….it will be tough with travel this month, but that will make it more interesting to seek out new spaces to “play”! Thanks for the opportunity to tag along. And here’s hoping this is one holiday habit that I can stick to! : )

  3. This is such a great idea! I actually don’t have a problem sticking to my workout sin DEcember, mainly because I get some of the “no sun blues” and I know that if I don’t workout it will be worse! I do have problems keeping my workout new and fun, so I pledge to do yoga and/or pilates at least once a week, and to do a new Jillian Michael’s workout once a week too (those things are great!).

  4. I’m in! I’m a gym junkie whose sick addiction keeps my motivation high. However, I am recently feeling the inflammation of my plantar factitious residing so I have new running goals for December that I am working on to get me back in the game!
    DECEMBER GOALS
-Do a run 4 times a week for total of 20-30 miles a week
-Participate in yoga once a week
-Try 2 new classes in the month of December
-Do yoga at least 3 times during this month

AND my new favorite running song is KRAZY by Pit Bull and Lil Jon :) LOVE it!!!

  5. great idea to do this in December its a hard month for folks have a great weekend

  6. ok, i am going to continue my morning jogs on weekdays before the kids/hubby wake up – from now until dec 16; then, while we are on our two-week holiday, i will commit to, uh, hm, uh, hm, trying to keep my daily pie intake to two pieces. :)

  7. Great challenge! I’ll have to think about it for a bit as I will be gone for part of December, and I want to come up with a realistic challenge. I’ll be back! :)

  8. Love the idea! My commitment is to do something physically active for at least 30 minutes three times per week.

  9. I am following you on FB. Looking forward to seeing your progress :)

  10. Hmmm fave workout tunes vary by the type of workout I’m doing. One song that never lets me down is “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J. An oldie but a goodie!

  11. I am excited about this challenge! I commit to five days of doing SOMETHING. I think this will likely translate into two days of running and three days of walking. I am hoping that these workouts can help jump start my work days!

    Here we go!

  12. Great idea. My goal is to get 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week, 40 minutes of strength training and two yoga sessions on the weekend to reduce stress. This is my current workout, but I’ve not been good about getting the strength training in, so I’m going to concentrate on that. Have a wonderful week and thanks for the inspiration. :)

  13. Following you on Twitter. This is exactly the kick-in-the-pants I needed to get back on the fitness track!

  14. My fitness goal for December is to do cardio (elliptical/treadmill) for 30 minutes 3 times per week and do some sort of pilates/yoga/strength training working/DVD 2 times per week.

  15. I follow you on Twitter and I am on a “Facebook vacation” right now so when I bring that back will be sure to “like” your page on there.

  16. My dad raised me to be a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, so when I am working out I always make sure to add “Born to Run” to my playlist…makes me really want to run/move!

  17. My running suffers in Dec. I’m in for 3 days a week of running or Mon, Fri and 1 weekend day this week. I have tennis/barre other things but it’s the running I need to commit to.

  18. I’m up for the December challenge! Planning to exercise 4 days a week….running, walking, jogging, biking etc. Just some form of exercise to keep my body moving!

    I might need some encouragement!

  19. Ah, EA! Perfect timing! Thanks for the challenge. Just what I needed…I had already kicked out my activity routine to get through Thanksgiving and worried that I’d keep the same pattern for December. Love the inspiration!

I commit to a minimum of 4 days a week doing a (minimum) 30 min walk or 20 min stair-climb routine as well as 20 push-ups and 50 crunches. Plus, one activity class per week – either in person, online, or on DVD.

  20. You’re so right. I’m joining a new gym tomorrow…but am traveling for 11 days of December. It’ll be tough. My goal is to do 2 1/2 hours of intense physical activity each week of December!

  21. This sounds like fun…I’m in!
A minimum of four days per week I will do a cardio workout (hiking, jogging, treadmill, biking/spin, other) for at least 45 minutes, plus I will do a minimum three strength training sessions per week no less than 30 minutes each.

  22. I’m also following you on Facebook!

  23. traci taylor says:

I too follow you on facebook. I am up for the challenge. I vow to do 5 days of cardio a week, 3 days of weight training and I am also keeping a food diary…Thanks for the inspiration!

  24. I am going to put on here what has been my weekly goals for each week for the entire past year. With moving I was not able to stick with it all year, but it continues to be my plan. I set my goals a little lower than what I really hope to accomplish because if one week I can’t fit it all in I do not beat myself up about it because it still met my goal. Then when I exceed this I feel an extra rush for pushing myself a little extra. My goal is for at least cardio for 30 minutes 4 days a week and weight training at least 2 days a week. Most weeks I am able to do 5 days of cardio and 3 days of weight lifting, but at least I am able to meet my minimums.

  25. I will walk at least 20 minutes every day, go on my exercise bike at least 3 times a week, cut out sugar from my cups of tea and coffee from my weekly diet! I aim to be comfortable with myself by Christmas day. I do not care what anyone thinks of how I look, this is my own personal challenge and I can’t wait to kick-start 2012 looking and feeling great about myself :) Good luck with your challenge x

  26. 6 workouts/week, at least 20 minutes each. I’ll be traveling for part of the month and will do a lot of improvised workouts, but I’m determined to do “something” every day. I’ve started to put together yoga workouts and body weight workouts with lots of jumping jacks, squats, lunges, push ups, etc.

  27. Hi EA – sounds great. My goal is to do 3 workouts of the day a la crossfit, run twice (weather permitting), and go to the gym for stairmaster or spin class to bring the total to 6 days of exercise a week. I do my workouts at home using kettlebells, a jump rope, a heavy duty resistance band, and a pull up bar, as well as doing exercises that Andrea mentioned above (squats, lunges and pushups, etc.). good luck, everyone! P.S. – following you on Twitter and FB.

  28. Great idea! I have a hard time with exercising in December because of exam period, but have to get over the mental hurdle that with no lectures I actually have MORE time to exercise! Will have to force myself to work-out in the stuffy gym for the 3 week exam period, but will have lots of fun when I head back to the wild west coast, always lots of hiking/skiing/biking!

    My goals for December:
-Practice cross-country skate-skiing min. 3 times on my BF’s annual New Year’s family ski trip
-Hike 3 different mountains when visiting my parents
-Bike up our favourite mountain 2 times when at the family cabin
-Go for 3 long walks (up/around Mount Royal) throughout the week (getting very icy, makes me nervous running!)
    -Strength train 40 minutes 2xweek
-30 minutes of cardio 3xweek (shouldn’t be too difficult with our action-packed family holiday plans!)

  29. Just leaving a comment to share my final results from the #DecFit Challange! Overall I only missed 2 workouts for the month, which I think is pretty good considering Christmas, my birthday, and NYE/New Years all feel in this past week! Thanks for hosting this awesome challenge, you definitely motivated me to hit the gym this month!

  30. I did pretty well with the challenge, and I met/exceeded my goals for the first 3 weeks of December, but then once my husband was off work we were on a different schedule and we only went to the gym once. But, the good news was that we did spend some time getting out and seeing some more of Japan, which was nice. He had been working 12 hour night shifts so there was not much time to do that before he was given a holiday break. Oh military life!

  31. I did pretty good with my December challenge. I only missed a few workouts. I did not gain any weight which was my main goal for the month. I found that having goals helped keep me focused. Also I kept a log of my workouts and food. This helped me greatly because I could see exactly what I was doing.
